Welcome to greenfire farm, located in the lovely foothills of the Appalachins in Southeastern Ohio, near Athens: home of Ohio University. This is our 4th year raising dairy goats. At the moment, we are raising Purebred Registered Nubians and have 1 Alpine wether in pack and harness training (We are interested in raising French Alpines also). Our herd currently totals 8 goats: 5 does (one is a baby just purchased from 4D's Farm), 2 wethers; and one young buck; no herd sires yet. Some of the bloodlines we currently have are Poverty-Knob, Kaczara-Farm, and Merri-Acres. Besides raising and selling dairy goats, we are getting into training pack and harness goats. Our other creatures around the farm include around 27 rare breed ducks (Indian Runners, Welsh Harliquins, Khaki Campbells and Silver Appleyards), which we also show; 2 rabbits and 2 cats.
Last year was a buck year for us; no does of our own, (I hope to have some improvement on that this year with 4 does bred instead of 2), but as of the last testing session in 2001, we are CAE and CL free. We vaccinate annually for Tetanus and Enterotoxemia and all kids are disbudded. As of yet, we are not on either DHIR or L.A., but hope to start both soon. Right now the only place we are showing at is the Athens County Fair,as our chidren are in 4-H; but in the coming year we most likely will be traveling to several shows in our region. Please e-mail me, call or write if you have Nubians or Alpines for sale in Ohio or are interested in buying kids.
We bred all our does late in the fall so our first kids are due around April 7 this year. Greenfire Frosty's Poppy, my favorite doe, was first in her class at the fair and freshened at around 8 pounds a day (with a nearly perfect udder) as a first freshener. I expect great things of her this coming year. By next year I will probably have 1 or 2 fully trained pack wethers for sale also.
